When sculptor Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins and Palaeontologist Sir Richard Owen produced several life-sized restorations of dinosaurs for the Crystal Palace exhibition in 1854, they placed the distinctive thumb-spike of Iguanodon on the end of its nose. The complete model of the Iguanodon looked more like a stubby-legged toad than the creature we see here. That said, considering the remains available, these reconstructions were a remarkable achievement.
